Dr. Uday Bhanu Rana, a gynecologist posted in the Zonal Hospital of Mandi District in Himachal Pradesh has spent Rs 12 lakh from his own pocket to provide the facility of total laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery for poor women patients. Dr. Uday prefers laparoscopic surgery because, in laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon only has to make 2-3 holes of 1 cm and 0.5 cm each in the body. The patient can be treated through these holes. There is no need to cut the abdomen, which requires leaving behind a 15-20 cm scar and enduring a long healing process for the patient. TLH surgery saves the patient from excessive blood loss and pain and facilitates fast recovery as compared to the old procedure of surgery. “I know these women will suffer less pain and recover fast. It is not money but recovery of the patients that matter for doctors and we have achieved this feat successfully which should be the commitment of any dedicated doctor,” he said. Dr. Uday conducts these surgeries for free. A normal patient would have to pay between Rs 50,000-Rs 1 lakh at a private hospital. For Dr. Uday, serving in public health has brought him a sense of fulfillment. He plans to keep serving people and helping the needy for as long as he can.
