None of it is real…
When was the last time you saw 100’s people in the street shouting at each other about Brexit? families engaged in a slanging match about whether or not they are going to vaccinate their child? Or George down the street waving a bit of steak in Katie the vegans face and calling her a moron?
The answer is…well, never! Sure there’s the odd protest about these things, but on your common-all-garden street, they just aren’t a reality.
The big problem is, it feels like a reality because, like it or not, our thoughts, opinions and perception of the world are guided, shaped and in many cases straight up incepted, by the technology we use (both consciously and unconsciously). Big-tech’s fight for our attention is having a truly profound effect on our perception of the world at large.
Spend some time free of all platforms, and you’ll start to unpick the polarised narratives you’ve created ‘for yourself’ having derived them from the online world in which we’re all so deeply immersed.
A world where it’s acceptable to swear at people you don’t know, call them stupid, make fun of them and insult their families! A world where it’s not uncommon to see arguments with hundreds of thousands of people weighing in without any real comprehension of the facts. A world where you’re constantly comparing your shit life to your school friend’s ‘always out out’ persona.
A version of all of these things happen in the real world, that would be a fair statement, but guess what, in the grand scheme of things, they are so small and insignificant!
Of course everything is grounded in a truth of sorts originally, but the amplification engines found in all corners of the World Wide Web leave us with a very different perception of the world to the one we see when out for a walk in the evenings
I guess the point is, we all spend way too much time in this completely made up online world, and the more time you spend in it, the more big-tech influence your perception of the world! Make sure your time online is on your terms, brings you value, joy and... wherever possible, spend more time untethered and outside innit 🙌
